SCOTCH PLAINS NEW JERSEY TOWN & SCHOOL REPORTS

    Scotch Plains

The native people living in this area were the Raritans, of the Leni Lenape branch of the Delaware indians. They lived in a large village near what is now Shackamaxon Golf Course and in the Ashbrook golf course area. The land was first claimed by the Dutch in 1609 as a result of Henry Hudson's explorations.

The heartland of Scotch Plains was first owned by a Dutchman, Peter Sonmans, until the English conquest in 1664. Capt. John Baker bought the region from the Indians before 1684 paying one cent for every ten acres. In 1684 and 1685 the village was settled by Scotch immigrants under the leadership of George Scot - thus, the name Scot's Plains.

Early on Scot's Plains was part of West Fields (later Westfield) which in turn was part of Elizabethtown. At this time people traveled by horseback on Indian trails which were later adorned with wagon wheel tracks from stagecoaches and buggies. These paths became the present main streets: Front Street, Park Avenue, Martine Avenue, Raritan Road and Westfield Road. Scot's Plain, which included what is now Fanwood, grew slowly in population and was a farming community for 200 years.

Today the Township of Scotch Plains retains its small town image. It has been moving forward in providing diversified services and activities to meet the needs of its residents. Surrounding the Borough of Fanwood where there is a Train Station sending commuters and pleasure seekers to New York City, Scotch Plains offers easy accessibility to major State Highways, including Routes 22, 78 and 287, the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike.

Scotch Plains is family oriented featuring many parks for recreation as well as a park area in the Watchung Mountains. One Country Club, two golf courses and an amusement park add to the variety within the community. Many civic organizations are very active in providing assistance to youth and needy causes.

MENDHAM NEW JERSEY TOWN & SCHOOL INFO

    Mendham

The first settlers over 250 years ago were attracted to Mendham Township by the abundance of natural resources. They found water, trees for fuel, and rich deposits of ore. By 1748 the area had iron forges, sawmills, and a gristmill along the North Branch of the Raritan River. Deposits of iron ore, mica, and limestone also attracted many settlers. Limestone was quarried in Ralston, the town's early name, for building material, or burned in one of fifteen kilns to produce lime for fertilizer and mortar.

Demographics
Mendham 07945

On the eastern side of Mendham Township, brooks that formed the upper reaches of the Whippany River attracted settlers to the valley called Water Street or Waterville, later known as Brookside. Today Brookside is laced with tailraces, culverts, tunnels, and other conduits, which formed a complex water distribution system that powered gristmills, sawmills, and textile mills. Other industries along "The Street" included a tannery, shoe factory, glassworks, carpet mill, and iron works.

Following the Civil War, Mendham Township's industrial economy declined. Local industries found it difficult to compete with larger urban factories. The railroad, the great engine of 19th century economic prosperity, did not arrive in the Township until 1888. The Rockaway Valley Railroad (called "Rock-A-Bye-Baby" by those familiar with its unsteady ride) carried agricultural goods, coal, mail, and some passengers. The railroad's presence never led to the development typical of the late 19th century suburbanization that so dramatically changed nearby communities such as Morristown and Madison. The railroad operated for only 25 years. The tracks were removed during World War I for salvage.

Though manufacturing declined in Mendham Township, many people still farmed. In fact, farming had been a major activity in the township since its settlement in the early 18th century. Names of prominent farming families are remembered to this day: Pitneys, Lorees, Ledells, and Guerins.

Despite the present-day transformation from a rural farming community to a residential suburb, Mendham Township retains its early character through its carefully preserved homes, farm buildings, and villages. These are living remnants of the township's past. Here people worked where they lived in a natural setting, away from the "dark satanic mills" of the big city, pursuing economic independence - a portrait of Americana.

Today, Mendham Township is a thriving community located in the south central portion of Morris County, approximately 35 miles west of New York City and 28 miles northwest of Newark. Philadelphia is approximately 80 miles to the southwest. Mendham enjoys convenient access via major highways in northern New Jersey, including Routes 24, 287, 80, 202, and 206.

READINGTON NEW JERSEY TOWN & SCHOOL INFO

    Readington

Created by Royal Charter of King George II "Readings" Township was formed July 15, 1730. It was the first new township created after Hunterdon became a county. During the early part of the Eighteenth Century Dutch settlers had begun putting this area in the mainstream of development. Many names of the original settlers are still to be found in Readington Township. Their descendants are numerous and some still living on family farms. Growth in Readington was slow and orderly. It was an agrarian society of little villages.

Today, Readington Township with an area of 47.8 square miles remains the largest township in the county. Located approximately midway between New York City and Philadelphia it has access to a market area that covers approximately one-quarter of the United States population. Readington is bound by the South Branch of the Raritan River on the South border, Clinton Township on the West border, Tewksbury Township on the North border and Somerset County on the East border.

Readington Township is host to one of Hunterdon's most popular and spectacular events - the annual Balloon Festival at Solberg Airport. Held each year, the festival is the largest of its kind in the East and draws tourists and participants from all over the country.

Since 1960 the township has grown from a population of 6,311 to 10,855 people in 1980. It grew to 13,400 in 1990 and, according to the Hunterdon County Planning Board population projection, by the year 2000, the Township's population will exceed 18,000 people.

SHORT HILLS/ MILBURN NEW JERSEY TOWN & SCHOOL REPORTS

 Millburn-Short Hills

The township was named "Millburn" in 1857, as a tribute to a local mill built on a stream, with "burn" being the Scottish name for "stream." Shortly after 1870, Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the roller window shade, decided to make his home here and to enter the real estate business to establish an "ideal community." He purchased and resold much of the "short hills" area and adopted the Indians' name for his community. Today, Short Hills remains an area of Millburn Township.

Millburn is located just west of Newark between the Pasaic River and Newark Bay along Highway 527 in the southwest corner of Essex County. The Township is easy to reach via the NJ Transit midtown direct line, the Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike, and it is also convenient to Routes 24 and 78.
