| WATCHUNG Nestled between two ridges of the rocky Watchung Mountains, the Borough of Watchung is bordered by both Morris and Union Counties. The name Watchung is derived from an Indian word meaning "on the hill" or "high place", and is believed to have been given to the area by the Lenni-Lenape Indians. This picturesque hilltop town is rich in legend, including the one of Indian princess Wetumka, who saved early settlers from massacre because she was in love with one of them. When Dutch settlers arrived in the early 1700's, they came to the Watchung region to take advantage of the rich soil. The region was well known as a thriving agricultural area. |
